The Black City: Viking Names on the Fly

Keeping up the toolkit spirit of the past few posts, here's a list of Viking styled names for generating NPC's on the fly.  For names without a surname, you can either add a quick moniker (Alfgeir would be Alfgeir the Proud, for instance); roll again to find a father's name - Alfgeir would become Alfgeir Amundson if Amund was the second roll; or pick a suitable location - Alfgeir of Zealand.  Voila - instant Viking name.

I have some ship names, adventuring party names, and female names in the queue.

  1. No room for a Gest? Or the odd Odd?

Seriously, nice list. Old Norse names are the best. I've done a few viking-themed D&D games and it's handy that (for example) Njal's Saga has an index of its 300+ characters, including such ready-made adventurer names as Grim the Red, Brynjolf the Brawler, and the awesomely-monikered 10th-century Earl of Orkney, Thorfinn Skull-splitter.

(By contrast, the Carolingians could only manage Charles the Bald and, um, Charles the Fat. It's like they weren't even trying.)

  2. Oh, and Pepin the Short, for crying out loud. And they ripped him off from Tolkien. Probably.

  3. Great list of names. A good set and use of names certainly helps create a consistency and feel for the setting.
